|Lug to Lug:
The Megaquartz watches were introduced in the early 1970’s and the most advanced of these was the Megaquartz 2.4Mhz (denoting that it resonated at 2.4 000 000 vibrations per second) calibre 1500 series.
Produced collaboratively between Omega and Batelle Institute the 1500 elephant calibre was introduced at the 1970 Basel Fair boasting an accuracy of 1 second per month, 5 times that of any quartz watch produced to that date, and still hailed as one of the most accurate watches ever made.
This prototype calibre soon evolved in to a series of three watches, two in Marine Chronometer guise using calibre 1511 and later 1516, and one using calibre 1510 which was branded as the Omega Constellation Megaquartz 2.4Mhz.
The ‘Stardust dial’ variant as it is known is made up of aventurine crystal, mined from a single source in Peru, laid by hand in to the dark blue painted and lacquered dial to represent the constellation at night. No two dials are the same, and as only 1000 of each calibre were produced, with the exception of special editions and one off’s, this makes them amongst the rarest Omegas ever made.
This watch has had a full service by Omega STS in the UK at a cost of over £1200 and comes with service receipts and two year Omega guarantee.
